Earth Officially Rebranded As 'Legacy Planet' Following $20 Billion Lunar Pivot

Space agency executives confirm the flaming sphere we currently inhabit will remain operational for free-tier users, but all new infrastructure will be built in the premium orbital vacuum.

Earth Officially Rebranded As 'Legacy Planet' Following $20 Billion Lunar Pivot

WASHINGTON (The Trough) — Follow the smoke, folks, and you'll find the money rocketing straight into the stratosphere. While residents of the Northern Hemisphere spent their weekend trying to filter ash out of their tap water through dirty sweatpants, space agency accountants quietly funneled another $20 billion into the ultimate off-shore tax haven: the Moon.

The paper trail is damning. Unredacted budget proposals obtained by this reporter reveal that the so-called "Artemis surface base" isn't a scientific outpost, but a taxpayer-subsidized gated community for billionaires tired of breathing the same combusting atmosphere as the middle class.

"We prefer to think of the Earth as our beta-testing environment, and honestly, the servers are getting a bit too hot," said NASA Director of Orbital Gentrification Brenton Vance, adjusting a respirator that cost more than your car. "The lunar surface offers zero atmospheric interference, zero pesky ecological regulations, and most importantly, zero poors. It’s a completely scalable vacuum."

The pivot away from an orbiting station to a permanent lunar ground base proves they know the ship is sinking. Why build a temporary lifeboat when you can build an exclusive yacht club on a dead rock? They're stripping the copper wire out of Earth's walls before the bank forecloses.

"Look at the telemetry data, it’s all right there in black and white," whispered independent aerospace auditor Sylvia Treadwell from a secure, windowless bunker. "They’re building a nuclear power plant on the lunar South Pole by 2036. By then, the American Midwest will be relying on gerbil wheels and good vibes to power its air conditioners."

At press time, NASA announced a new initiative to bottle Earth’s remaining clean oxygen, not to save it, but to sell it back to us as "artisanal retro-air" from the lunar gift shop.
